I joined the East Midlands Committee in 2017 and was elected as Honorary Secretary in 2018 before being elected as Vice Chair in 2021. I am passionate about the highways and transportation industry and revel in being involved with the CIHT. I want to share my love for the industry by ensuring that our region has some excellent events and supports its members with their professional development and progression.
My background is a mixture of private sector consulting and Local Authority Highways in highway maintenance and improvements. I feel strongly about sustainable transport and have developed my career over the last few years to focus on this important topic. I was involved with the development and planning of major cycle and walking schemes in Wolverhampton via the Black Country LEP fund ‘Managing Short Trips’, and the delivery of the Nottingham City Ring Road Shared Cycle Route and Eco Expressway. I moved to Kier in 2016 specialising in sustainable transport, safety and improvements on the Strategic Road Network.
Dr Jwan Kamla is a Senior Safety Risk and Operations Consultant with 17 years of experience in Civil, Transportation and Road Safety Engineering in the UK and overseas. Jwan currently is a Technical Specialist Lead in the area of “Data, Modelling and Collision Analysis” and a Road Safety Audit Team Member.
She is a Chartered member of the CIHT and joined the CIHT East Midlands committee in 2018.
Jwan’s main focus is to make the world better for everyone through involvement in tasks which aim to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on roads and she is passionately working hard towards achieving that. Jwan is also passionate to provide mentoring and support to the CIHT members.
Dr Federico Perrotta is a Consultant in Civil Engineering with experience in the areas of Transportation, Pavement Design, Asset Management and Road Safety.
Passionate about his job, Federico makes use of his background in Research, Computer Programming and Big Data Analytics to model complex physical problems, automate processes and reduce inefficiencies through innovation.
Member of CIHT from 2019, Federico was elected as Young Professionals (YP) Chair of the CIHT East Midlands Committee in 2020 before being elected to the Secretary role in 2022.
James Goodwin is an experienced highways contract manager working for a large UK based road surface treatments organisation UK wide and resides in the East Midlands. He is an incorporated engineer and member of the East Midlands CIHT committee. He is a vocal advocate of the CIHT in the East Midlands and had been a member since 2016.
James has over 10 years' experience in the highways sector from conventional asphalt pavements, road markings, drainage, section 278 works and other alternative surface treatments.
Sara is a Transport & Infrastructure Planning Associate Team Leader with BWB. She has over 25 years experience in transport planning, working for a variety Nottingham based private consultancies and is a member of CIHT.
Her main areas of interests are sustainable and active travel and the development implementation and monitoring of travel plans.
In her current position she oversees teams in Nottingham and Birmingham and assists with project resourcing and financial management for the service as a whole. She is responsible for ensuring her team provide the correct technical support for their clients, including providing high level advice for strategic land promotion, Access Appraisals, Transport Assessments / Statements, Travel Plans, preliminary access and junction design, junction modelling, WCHAR Assessments, S106 negotiations and post planning advise.
She also assists with the development of their more junior team members and business development / networking opportunities within the East Midlands. She is a Wellbeing Ambassador at BWB and part of that role includes raising awareness and opening up discussion relating to Wellbeing by creating Sharepoint and Teams Communication pieces, and promoting internal events.
Sara is a member of the Women in Planning East Midlands committee. Their aim is to promote a diverse, equitable and inclusive planning industry, providing accessible networking and development opportunities within the East Midlands. As a committee member, she is responsible for identifying, marketing and promoting their regional events. This includes securing speakers, venues and sponsorship for events. Creating flyers (using Canva), sending out emails (using Mailchimp) to their subscribers, creating events using Eventbrite and Eventcube and promoting events on LinkedIn.
Naomi is a Design Manager, Road Safety specialist and experienced Assessor in Walking, Cycling and Horse-Riding Assessment and Review, with over 15 years’ experience, predominantly in the private sector. Based in the East Midlands and currently working in Nottingham, Naomi has an MSc in Transport Planning and Management, graduating from Sheffield Hallam University and is a Fellow of the CIHT.
Her passion is road safety and active travel as part of major and complex capital projects and is keen on encouraging the next generation into such a broad and interesting profession. Naomi’s background is transport planning, feasibility and preliminary design with a strong focus and passion for Road Safety.
Naomi has worked predominantly in the private sector with the main part of her career working in MAC and ASC contracts in Area 7 (East Midlands region) and Area 12 (Yorkshire and Humber). Naomi is a successful bid writer and in previous years was part of the successful bid teams at A-one+ winning Area 4 and Area 12.
More recently Naomi moved into an exciting role at BWB Consulting Ltd where she has the opportunity to be involved in a variety of schemes from concept (Development Consent Order) through to detailed design and beyond. The Transport and Infrastructure Design Team that Naomi is part of are involved in include Design and Build schemes with construction partners, Local Highway Authority highway improvement and urban realm schemes, and also infrastructure projects for Strategic Rail Freight Interchanges, such as the East Midlands Gateway Project. Her current role affords her the pleasure of incorporating active travel and sustainable transport into highway design (WCHAR) as well as keeping her competency up to date as a Road Safety Auditor.
Naomi heads up the CIHT East Midlands Events sub-committee, enjoying the benefits of continued professional development and networking with fellow professionals across the field of civil engineering.
Tony joined as a Committee Member for the East Midlands Region in 2021. His passion for the Highways and Transportation industry runs deep in him and that has influenced his decision to join CIHT in the first place. His desire to serve in the CIHT is born out of a passion to support the institution in its various outreach and events to the industry and its professional members in their progress and development.
As a BSc. Graduate of Land / Engineering Surveying who went on to gain an all round experience ranging from Land / Topographic Surveys, Setting-Out / As-Built Survey to working as Site Engineer and Project Manager, Tony also has experience in the UK as well as working abroad in various roles over the past 19 years.
His passion for the industry led him to study an MSc in Civil Engineering and Construction Management. On graduation he joined Derby City Council Traffic and Transportation department but he now works for National Highways as a Site Supervisor where he intends to drive home the Professional standards of the profession.
Vivian is a Chartered Engineer and Technical Director for Arcadis with over 15 years experience in the industry. He is a Fellow of CIHT and a CEng Reviewer.
Yulan is currently a PhD student in Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham. After graduating with distinction from the University of Nottingham with an MSc, Yulan decided to continue her studies. Her research is focused on biomimicry, aiming to apply natural ideas to structures and materials.
Yulan is always keen to learn new things in Civil Engineering and the CIHT has provided her with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the transport industry and keep up to date with what is happening.
Behzad is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Technical Director at Jacobs with 20 years experience in the industry. He is a Fellow of CIHT and a Visiting Professor at Aston University. He served as Chair of the CIHT East Midlands Committee in 2019-2021. Behzad is also a CEng Reviewer.
Nick Thom started his career with Scott Wilson in 1978, spending 3 years in the design office, 3 years on a highway construction site, 3 years at the University of Nottingham on PhD research and 4 years with Scott Wilson Pavement Engineering. Since 1991 he has been a member of staff at the University of Nottingham. He specialises in the analysis and design of pavement and rail track and teaches highway, airfield and railway engineering.
His role includes research, current projects being on road surface damage, concrete pavement deterioration, use of recycled aggregate, asphalt fatigue and rail track drainage.
