SoRSA Membership Grades Application Guidance

Affiliate Applications

Please complete sections 1, 2 and 3 as a minimum. Experience in the field is not required and this information is requested only to assist SoRSA in developing new member services. For section 2, please note that brief details are all that are required.

Associate Applications

Please complete sections 1, 2 and 3 as a minimum. The details supplied should show to the SoRSA Membership Committee how you meet the requirements of an Observer under HD 19/03 “Road Safety Audit” – one year’s accident investigation /road safety engineering experience and 10 days formal training (which can be made up from a number of formal road safety training courses). Section 2 does not require 300 words per box and should simply identify how you meet the requirements for this grade of membership. For example, the road safety audit experience box may simply state “None”.

Member Applications

Please complete all sections. You ensure that you have provided sufficient information for the SoRSA Membership Committee to satisfy them that you comply with the requirements for road safety audit team leader or team member. Applications for SoRSA membership will be assessed against in-depth criteria which may not reflect the standards against which all currently practising auditors will have been assessed.

Fellow Applications

Please complete all sections, with the exception of section 6 as the information requested should be included in the report submitted as part of your application (as detailed below). You should ensure that you have provided sufficient information for the SoRSA Membership Committee to satisfy them that you have surpassed the requirements for road safety audit team leader.

Applicants for Fellow must also submit a separate 2000 word report on their road safety audit experience. The report will reflect your high level of experience in road safety audit, accident investigation or road safety engineering, leading audit teams on large, complex audits and recommending interesting or innovative solutions to identified problems. You should additionally demonstrate that you have proven ability and have made a significant contribution to the profession. As a senior member of the profession, a candidate would have reached a pinnacle of career distinction within the field of road safety audit.

Honorary Memberships of SoRSA

Honorary Fellowship, Award of Honorary Fellowship

The Society may grant the status of Honorary Fellowship in specific circumstances largely intended to reward significant involvement in the field of Road Safety Audit.

Scope and Process

Honorary Fellow is the Society’s most senior grade of Membership and is only conferred on persons of eminence or distinction within the field of Road Safety Audit.

The grant of Honorary Fellowship may only be conferred on persons who are not members of the Society as the Society’s committee shall in their absolute discretion think fit.

Any member of the Society may nominate a person for consideration as an Honorary Fellow and should provide supporting evidence to justify the nomination. The nomination should be submitted to the Society’s Honorary Secretary in writing and the submission should include the supporting evidence.

The Society’s committee will consider all such nominations at their next meeting and will announce the grant at an appropriate time, e.g. the Society’s Annual General Meeting.

Criteria

The key nomination criteria are that potential recipients should have:

  • Had a significant involvement in the initial or ongoing development of Road Safety Audit; and
  • Their status should be considered to be ‘long-lasting’, i.e. even after retirement or (possibly) death; their name should have some resonance.

In making nominations members may consider:

  • Will a significant proportion of the membership of SoRSA recognise the names of the Honorary Fellows and understand, without explanation, why they have received the honour?
  • Will the industry remember the Honorary Fellow after he/she has retired or died?
  • Will association of the name of Honorary Fellow with SoRSA bring benefit (status by association) to SoRSA either in the UK or overseas?
  • Will the recipient of Honorary Fellowship understand and appreciate the honour being bestowed?

Honorary Membership, Award of Honorary Membership

The Society may grant the status of Honorary Membership in specific circumstances largely intended to reward persons who have an overarching role in defining Road Safety Audit policy at regional and national level.

Scope and Process

Honorary Member is a significant award granted by the Society. The award may only be conferred on persons who have a clear and distinct role in defining Road Safety Audit policy within their operational area only and may not be awarded to persons who undertake Road Safety Audits.

The Society’s committee shall have absolute discretion in determining who should receive the award.

Any member of the Society may nominate a person for consideration as an Honorary Member and should provide supporting evidence to justify the nomination.

  • Had or has a significant overarching role in defining Road Safety Audit policy at regional and national level; and
  • Their role should be readily recognised by Road Safety Auditors within their region or nationally and their name should have some resonance.

  • Will association of the name of Honorary Member with SoRSA bring benefit (status by association) to SoRSA either in the UK or overseas?
  • Will the recipient of Honorary Membership understand and appreciate the honour being bestowed?
