The CIHT East of England Awards are back for 2023!

The CIHT East of England celebrate the very best the region offers across the key areas of highways and transportation. They are open to everyone: members and non-members; small and large organisations; public, private and third sector. The Awards recognise the outstanding contribution that good projects and people make to our daily lives. The awards will be presented at our next East of England Annual Conference at the Belfry Hotel on 23 October 2023.

The Awards


Best highways and infrastructure project award

This award recognises the best project within the East of England region that has been completed, is substantially complete or has reached a significant milestone during 2022/23, and which illustrates best practice across a range of criteria. 

It will have been delivered by a team that can be seen as ambassadors for our profession who will have demonstrated excellence in the planning or engineering field within the highways and transportation industry.  

An independent panel of judges will seek evidence of excellence in the planning, design, implementation and construction. 

Judges will review the project submission against the following criteria: 

  • Innovation – the levels of enterprise and ingenuity shown by the project team at all stages in the development of the scheme
  • Benefits – how the scheme has led to improved safety, reduced congestion, provided benefits to the local community and end users
  • Health & Safety – approach during planning, design and construction
  • Objectives Met – completed on time, to budget, fully delivering client’s aims and objectives for the scheme, minimising disruption, levels of collaboration, demonstrating a best value approach, applying Lean Construction techniques
  • Sustainability  - efficient use of resources, de-carbonisation, use of sustainable products or ways of working and approach to Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Collaboration – how the various parties have worked together and the benefits derived from that approach.

Best sustainable transport (future mobility) project award

This award recognises that the future of transport is very different form the recent past. The contribution of transport to social, economic and environmental sustainability is immense, but how, where and when we, or our goods, travel has and will continue to change immeasurably. 

Entries are sought from teams or individuals based in the East of England who have done work during 2022 and 2023 such as but not limited to providing infrastructure for more sustainable travel or transportation of goods, promoting sustainable travel or delivery choices or maybe something much more radical? You are the leaders in this emerging field tell us what you are making happen out there!

Your project will have been delivered by a team that can be seen as ambassadors for our profession who will have demonstrated excellence in the planning or engineering field within the highways and transportation industry.  

An independent panel of judges will seek evidence of excellence in the planning, design, implementation and construction.

Judges will review the project submission against the following criteria:

  • Environmental- (social and economic benefits)  
  • Mode shift (towards more sustainable modes of transport)
  • Innovation
  • Objectives met
  • Planning (robustness of research and consultation)
  • Implementation (management, operation, communications)
  • Value for money – (outcomes/benefits versus cost)
  • Wider implementation potential
  • Influencing and awareness raising.

Equality, diversity and inclusion award

Best contribution to Equality Diversity and Inclusivity in the East of England Transport sector.

CIHT believes in working for equality, diversity and inclusion in the transportation sector. A sector that truly represents the wider community that we serve enables us to deliver the best solutions to the challenges we face.

This award recognises employers or individuals that have implemented (or been involved in) an EDI (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion) initiative of merit. The overall judging will consider how the EDI initiative has been implemented, what steps have been done in its creation and the measures used to monitor progress, including:

  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Clarity of aims & objectives
  • The accessibility of the EDI initiative
  • Lessons learnt during implementation
  • The longevity of the initiative
  • The EDI initiative should have made a positive contribution to the organisation, industry and society. The judges will also be looking for how well the initiative(s) have been embedded in the organisation and evidence of culture change.

Young Professional of the Year 2023 “The Mike Sharpe Award” award x 2

The award is given to a young person, less than 35 years of age and based in the East of England, who has made a significant contribution to the profession. 
Through the development or sharing of knowledge, through their role on a project anywhere in the world, and/or through the promotion of the profession. The aim of the Award is to celebrate individual excellence within the highways and transportation field. 

The award will have two categories; one for Apprentices and a second for Graduates with each category receiving a separate award. 

Nominations are invited either from individuals themselves or from colleagues or manager who wish to propose an individual for the award.  The nominee must be 35 years of age or under on 13th October 2023.  
 
The nomination can be made in any suitable media of authors choice (be that video, PowerPoint, written etc). The length in which ever format should be no longer than 5 minutes to view or read (written suggested no more than 1,000 words).  The submission (or link to it) should be submitted by e-mail to eastofengland@ciht.org.uk by 13th October 2023. 

An independent panel of judges with extensive experience in the industry will consider all the nominations and select the winning entry. 

The winners will be announced at the CIHT East of England Region Awards Dinner Dance at the Belfry Hotel, Cambourne on 23rd October 2023.

All entrants will receive free entry to the CIHT East of England Regional Conference. Shortlisted entrants will also receive a complimentary special guest invitation (including accommodation) to the Awards Dinner.

The winning entry for each category will be announced on the night and will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of £250.  The winner of the Award will have his/her details published in a subsequent issue of Transportation Professional.
